Poetry: Natural History

English Bay

The butter sun of a bright
Bay day slides down wide skies,
basting glazed bathers in
a uniform golden suet.
The ocean melts evenly
into the oven, cooling only
where it congeals, slick
with quick dip oil trails and
the thin, coagulating residue
of an afternoon's dissolution.
